BEEN AND GONDOLAS

Our trip to Venice was a bit last minute - special offer spotted on the Internet.  We arrived by vaporetto; must be the coolest way to arrive in a city.  And there were many surprises.

And the view from the embarkation quay told us we had arrived.

Our hotel was just across San Marco square - central, cosy, but uninteresting.  Only the ceiling light in our room hinted at Venice.

But this is what greeted us next morning.

There had clearly been a storm and a high tide, but we were pleasantly surprised to have several days of warm sunny weather.  I was also constantly surprised at how many large squares are packed between the maze of alleyways and canals.  Here is where we had coffee.

We then walked to Arsenale.  Time for another coffee (and a Proscecco).   The beauty of late November is the almost complete absence of crowds.

We then took the boat across to the islands.  I didn't expect this view of the Dolomites either.

Next day we spent cruising on the Grand Canal.

 Coffee by the Rialto bridge.

The sign on the wall of our lunch restaurant.  Hmmm, we ate ours.

Another beautiful evening.

Where else could we spent it . . .

Then dinner.

Just time next morning for coffee at Florians.

All I asked for was a coffee!  Then an early lunch, joined suddenly by half of Venice.

Farewell . . .

 . . . and welcome . . .

But we made it home eventually.
